'Berg Frij' (The Sky is the Limit)
Page Under Construction
Will outline Arbor day activites of Calidocious® Inc. "Berg Frij", pronounced 'Berg Fry', is the motto of Flander's leading outdoor/nature club.
Prior to the Californina Gold Rush of the 1850s, giant Sempervirens Redwood trees covered most of the coastal valleys of the
California Bay area. The mediteranean climate of the Bay Area, plus
frequent morning fog, had been an ideal habitat for the trees. Place
names such as "Redwood City" and "Redwood Road" attest to the
former prevalence of the trees.

| From 1850 to 1900, most of
the more accessible trees were harvested to build San Francisco and surrounding communities. A
second wave of harvesting occurred following the great San Francisco
earthquake and fire of 1906.
In the 1950s and 1960s the left-over
stumps of the giant redwoods, which can usually regrow from their
roots, suffered a third and fatal blow- redwood burl coffee tables,
made from the burgundy heartwood of the stumps, became popular.
|
As a result, Redwoods have all but vanished from some of the Bay Area
valleys. Calidocious® Inc. hopes to work with one of the local park
authorities to help the grand "Dukes of Burgundy" return to one of these valleys.
